However, today, most penicillin is produced synthetically in laboratories. Penicillin can be made from moldy bread. The mold that is typically found on bread, Penicillium chrysogenum, produces penicillin. Further experimentation showed that penicillin from the mold was antibacterial against streptococci, meningococci, and Corynebacterium diphtheriae, the causative agent of diphtheria.
