WebOpen Learning Environments (OLEs) are rooted in learner-centered design principles and highlight activities and contexts that “support the individual’s efforts to understand what he or she determines to be important” (Hannafin et al. 1994, p. 48). WebHere, I argue that only one algorithm is known to lead to the kind of open-endedness necessary for generalised intelligence — natural selection. To ask whether machine learning is open-ended, I therefore compare the logic of natural selection and machine learning to develop insights that could help to hone future investigations.
